lv return to hyperdub with a taste of whats to come on their forthcoming south london-meets-south africa album sebenza, due at the end of august. what lv make here is the exciting prospect of music influenced by south african house and kwaito, informed by regular trips out there and sessions with up and coming south african artists such as okmalumkoolkat, ruffest and spoek mathambo, but letting the influences of uk soundsystem music and hip hop bleed naturally into the mix too, creating a genuine hybrid.

>rispah<, the sophomore album by the invisible and their first for ninja tune, is >a love letter to grief< following the passing of singer dave okumus mother, is imbued with an inevitable melancholy but defined by a sense of hope. throughout, the band reveal their rich creativity and musicianship. echoes run through these songs of african music (including beautifully-woven-in samples of the singers from okumus mothers funeral), psalm tones and devotional music, in a silent way-era miles davis, hints of minimal classical composers such as steve reich and the wilder more psychedelic end of hip hop and related electronic musics.

bjoern stolpmanns new release >slow job< is a melodic and impulsive tech house track with a touch of real cool oldskool sounds in it. the vocals let you know that there was some real great techno music in the 90ies. the remix comes from the new york based south african brendon moeller and is a signature of his typical quality dub techno sound. with his hypnotizing & energetic dubby techno sound, he delivers another inspired groove with great quality.

first up is tabou for the people by sofrito specials featuring l barrabas which twitch edited for his dj sets a couple of years back. the lovely people at sofrito kindly gave permission for it to be included on this release. its a relentlessly driving slab of 4/4 afro funk with horn explosions. next up is the 10th and final track in twitchs cumbia series. the first 8 were released on japans lets get lost label and the missing number 9 is being saved for a future release. colombias cumbia was born out of african influences. this track is based around a sample from colombian cumbia legend andres landero and is an attempt to fuse traditional cumbia sounds with up to date production styles. the end result is a slow motion hypnotic cumbia retaining the haunting melancholia inherent in the original sample. leading the aa side, twitch passed a wild highlife song by ghanas atakoru manu to glasgows super talented auntie flo (whose highly recommended future rhythm machine album recently saw a release) to play around with. auntie flo cut it up and added additional drums and bass to come up with this euphoric modern highlife groover

romare is a young london to paris transient crate digger, collecting dusty snippets of undead voices and antiquated rhythms. once in his underground lab, these pieces of yesterday are chopped, spliced and reattached to create the sound of tomorrow. this ep explores the connection between the history of african and african-american culture in the form of collage to create musical conversations between the past, present and future.
samples of songs, speeches, interviews, field recordings and films were carefully chosen and rearranged: rhythms from africa are integrated with voices from harlem, conversations about race and identity between writers and ethnomusicologists are constructed, speeches from activists are conjoined with the voices of prisoners. this process of combining pre-existing material has inspired three >meditations on afrocentrism<.
